Micro needling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that was developed in 1995 and has evolved into the most advanced skin enhancement technology on the market today (Hou, A., Cohen, B., Haimovic, A., & Elbuluk, N., 2017). What makes micro needling so attractive to patients is the ability to perform the procedure on virtually every part of the body. It is effective for a variety of skin issues as well tolerated by most individuals. The procedure does not use heat, so it is a great idea for those that are sensitive to heat procedures. Micro needling is also able to be combined with PRP to further enhance its healing ability. However, preparing your body for micro needling will take some time. Here are a few things you need to know about micro needling and how to prepare for the procedure.
Avoid Shaving or Waxing
Shaving the skin or waxing may be tempting before undergoing micro needling, but it should be avoided. Additional irritation can negatively affect the procedure, so waxing should not be done within a week of micro needling and shaving should not be done within 2 days of the procedure.
No Anti-Inflammatory Medications
Some non-surgical cosmetic procedures require pain medication to alleviate discomfort, but due to the nature of micro needling and the medical injury it provides, anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen can inhibit the body’s natural inflammatory response necessary for the procedure to effectively begin the natural healing process and promote collagen production (Hou, A., Cohen, B., Haimovic, A., & Elbuluk, N., 2017).
No Lotions or Creams
Once you arrive at your micro needling appointment, your skin needs to be as clean as possible. Avoid the additions of any lotions, creams, or makeups that may negatively impact the procedure. It is best to avoid using any of these products for at least 12 hours prior to the procedure to avoid any possible negative reactions.
Notify of Any Tattoos in Treatment Area
Tattoos on the area being treated can have an unexpected effect on results. Consult with your micro needling professional before the day of treatment and show them any tattoos in the area so adjustments can be made to your individual treatment requirements.
Notify Provider of Any Medical Changes
Changes in medications and medical conditions should always be discussed before undergoing any non-surgical cosmetic procedures to ensure any possible reactions are accounted for. Always update your medical record with the non-surgical cosmetic facility to avoid any possible negative reactions from the micro needling procedure.
